Welcome to the English Department
“Everything in the world exists to end up in a book.”
In the English Department at King's we endeavour not only to prepare pupils for the challenges of public examinations but to equip them with useful skills for life beyond school and instil in them an interest in literature which will extend beyond the classroom.
The main aims of the department are:
- To encourage pupils to develop a lasting interest in language and literature
- To help pupils achieve a technical competence in reading and writing.
- To encourage reading for pleasure.
- To help pupils develop, and learn to adapt, their written and spoken communication skills.
- To prepare pupils thoroughly for public examinations.
- To make a contribution to a pupil's overall cultural and personal development.
The department currently has four main members of staff. Mrs M C Startin who is the Head of Department; Ms M King who is also Head of Theatre Studies; Mr C Oulton, Media Manager; Mrs R Vita and Mr D Barclay, currently on an exchange from New Zealand. In addition, we are fortunate to have Mr M Parr, the Head of Classics contributing to the teaching within the department.
We are housed in four classrooms in the Memorial Hall building. Each classroom has audio/visual equipment and there are also data projectors in two of the classrooms. The department is well-equipped with a range of audio/visual resources and a varied stock of fiction and non-fiction texts as well as a store of schemes of work and teaching resources.
