Physical Education
The Physical Education Department offers access to first-class facilities, dynamic, experienced and PE trained teaching staff, a multi-dimensional and diversified syllabus, a vast extra-curricular programme and varied and stimulating material involving applied sports theory and practical sessions. PE is an increasingly popular option for GCSE and the results last year were excellent.
In Form 3 and 4 each pupil will have 2 periods of PE a week which will involve developing core skills in the major sports( Hockey, Netball , Rugby, Cricket, Tennis and Athletics) and introduction and improvement of both Fitness and Active Leisure activities( eg Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Trampolining and Softball.
King’s Bruton follows the AQA Examination Board's GCSE and AS/A2 Level Physical Education syllabus.
It is important that candidates are literate with a sound GCSE base or a solid A/B grade in Biology is advantageous. They should be interested in sport and society and linking theory to practice. It is not necessary to be an outstanding athlete or games player, but some ability and a keen interest in sport is essential. A GCSE in Physical Education is not a prerequisite.
The course is over 20 years old and is fully accepted by Universities and Colleges depending on the constraints of the course and the combinations chosen. Students are encouraged to look at individual university websites for specific details.
Career opportunities exist in the ever-growing leisure industry, teaching and coaching, recreational management, the health and fitness industry, sports marketing and professional sport. As a fully recognised AS and A2 qualification, Physical Education will support applications for a wide variety of degree courses.
