Physics Department
Here at King’s, we aim to challenge each and every student to look at the world around them in terms of physical ideas and through developing analytical skills. As a result, we hope they can see that Physics:
...is a practical, dynamic subject concerned with the study of matter and its motion...
...seeks to understand where the Universe came from, how it behaves and where it is going...
...examines phenomena from the utterly vast to the unimaginably tiny...
...the Sun accounts for 99.9% of all matter in the Solar System...the nearest star to the Sun is Alpha Centauri, 4.3 light years away (100 million times further than the Moon)...there are 200 billion stars in our own galaxy (the Milky Way)...there are over 100 billion other galaxies...
...four million Iron atoms would fit into one mm...there are 45 billion billion molecules in a cubic cm of air...atoms are extremely long-lived and durable – up to a billion of your atoms once belonged to Shakespeare...
... absolutely fundamental to human progress, the way we live today and finding solutions to the problems of tomorrow.
Lessons at all levels are led by practical experiments and demonstration wherever possible and students are encouraged to question everything they see.
