PSYCHOLOGY
The purpose of psychology is to give us a completely different idea of the things we know best. Psychology is everywhere and everything.
Psychology is not static; it is a subject that is about the now and the future. Psychologists are driven by a quest for human betterment.
Psychology is certainly NOT an easy option.
Those who study psychology at AS Level are asked to understand a diverse range of psychological concepts, applications and methods, to engage in evidence-based reasoning about psychological topics, as well as to develop the skills of analysis, interpretation and evaluation. An effective psychology student will have the ability to accept multiple explanations and be able to evaluate them systematically and objectively. Being aware of the limitations of our own research is essential to being a good psychologist. A willingness and a desire to look outside of the box is a definite requirement.
What is Psychology?
“The science of mind, behaviour and experience.”
The topics covered at AS are: Memory
Stress
Attachment
Research Methods
Abnormal Behaviour
Social Influences
Assessment:
Assessment is through examination, there is NO coursework.
AS has 2 X 1 ½ hour papers. The papers include short answer and stimulus response questions, as well as extended writing questions.
It does involve some mathematical and data interpretation.
University and beyond
- Psychology is a widely respected academic A level and equivalent to all other A levels with regard to university entrance. It is accepted as a science on some medical degree courses.
- To study psychology as a single honours at university, students are usually required to achieve AAB in their A levels.
- Employers are very keen to employ those who have studied psychology. Opportunities for career psychologists include: clinical, forensic, educational, health, sport and occupational.
All psychology students need to be enthusiastic, committed, open minded and curious. They should also realise that once they embark on the study of psychology there is no turning back. As once the questioning of what lies behind their every thought and behaviour starts it will never leave them. That is the one thing that is guaranteed!
Entry requirements: At least a grade B in English, Mathematics and 3 Sciences.
