The 45 mile Ten Tors Team took on North Dartmoor for their second training weekend in preparation for the 2017 event, writes Craig Barrow, Contingent Commander of the CCF.

Due to 40mph winds and driving rain, the 45 mile team did not walk on Saturday night as planned but instead camped at Shilstone Tor with the two 35 mile teams. Reveille on Sunday morning was at 5:15am. A quiet rendition of Happy Birthday for Mr Barrow was followed by a quick bowl of porridge, tents away and ready to walk at 6:40am. The group was only four people large this week, visibility was good and the temperature was acceptable for late February. The four were excellent at having to contend with a very strong SW wind of up to 40mph and the predictable Dartmoor rain.

The group quickly got into their stride and soon found their planned Saturday Night Campsite at Scorhill Down. From there the group ventured due South to Thornworthy Tor, Fenworthy Reservoir, Water Hill before heading due West to Stannon Tor and Hartland Tor. A welcome lunch break took place at Postbridge car park before the last leg which took in Lower White Tor, Higher White Tor and Wistman’s Wood before reaching the end of the day’s training at Two Bridges.

The group walked 18 ½ miles in good time and are working well in their training. Their walking pace is good and stays constant throughout the day. Their navigation skills are excellent and their fitness levels are high. The last training weekend of the term takes place this coming weekend. An album from this past training weekend can be viewed below.
