Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education.

The cross curricular aspects of the curriculum allow students to reflect on some of the major ideas and challenges facing individuals in the 21st Century. This provides themes which give learning relevance and helps King's students to make more sense of the world they live in. Therefore, King's PSHEE education curriculum enables pupils to:

  • Develop their well-being, self-esteem and belief in their ability to succeed and to take responsibility for their learning and how they are developing
  • Develop practical knowledge and skills to help them live healthily and deal with the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues they face as they approach adulthood
  • Understand and manage responsibly a wider range of relationships as they mature and to show respect for the diversity of, and differences between, people

In the 3rd Form students study the following themes:

  • Relationships in society - bullying/harassment ,Cyber abusers and safety, School therapist on bereavement, family relationships and divorce.
  • Drugs and smoking – Types and effect. Law and campaigns.
  • Sex education – Taught separately for boys and girls. Appropriate school relationships. Law, contraception, STI’S, pregnancy, cancer.
  • Careers - personal skills and employment. GCSE options
  • Research  skills – Use of the school library and Internet as a resource for learning.

In the 4th Form students study the following themes:

  • Careers - constructing C.V.s, writing letters of application, practising good interview skills
  • Personal Effectiveness. Stress, Depression, eating disorders and anger management strategies.
  • Wellbeing. Health. Tanning safety. Careers choices re study skills.
  • Alcohol. Use and abuse. The Law and impact of lives.

In the 5th Form students study the following themes:

  • Citizenship. Government and Parliament. Riots and responsibility.
  • Student finance – Budgeting, banks, student loans and debt. Avoiding scams.
  • Nutrition -  Healthy diet and exercise. Eating disorders.
  • Careers - A level and further Education options Future career paths.

 

In addition, we run a rolling programme of additional Sex education talks in the boarding Houses, given by the Health centre.

We have an annual lecture day, when an outside speaker talks to the whole school and parents on topics such as Drugs, Alcohol, Sex.

The Lower 6th have a Driving Safety presentation given by local Police and Fire officers.

The 6th Form have annual presentations on Personal Safety from an outside organisation, Brookes Jordan, where they learn how to be more street wise and master the basics of self- defence.

Additional 6th Form talks are planned eg “Banged up Abroad”- the perils of student and gap year travel.
