Sports Roundup Week 8...

Athletics

Rian competed this weekend for Somerset in the South West Combined Events Championships held at Exeter Arena in a full Decathlon.
On Saturday, he had the 100m, Long Jump, Shot, High Jump and 400m. Then on Sunday, he competed in the 110m Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin finishing with the gruelling 1500m. Unfortunately, the Somerset Team missed two of its top competitors, so Rian was competing as an Individual. He had a great two days finishing up 7th overall accumulating an impressive final score of 4338 points. This hopefully will be enough to qualify him for the English Schools Championships in September.

Tennis

Glorious sunshine greeted the Junior Girls’ Tennis pairs as we pulled into Taunton School for an unusual triangular fixture against Kings’s Taunton and Taunton School. Our 12 pairs were split into two groups to play at different locations in an extremely well-planned afternoon, where pairs played 4 time-constrained sets. Some fantastic Tennis was played by all, with many sets being very tightly contested. Mrs Ashworth also received quite a shock to find that a parent from King’s Taunton was actually an old school friend who she hadn’t seen for 28 years! Counting up all the points won in every game saw King's having secured 156 points in total, placing them only a little behind King’s Taunton and comfortably ahead of Taunton School.

Well done to all 24 girls who played this week - a record number!

Cricket

The 1st XI batted first against Clayesmore and due to some good bowling we were quickly 40/4. Michael H lead the resistance and batted flawlessly for a well deserved 63 not out. Will S helped him out with a valuable counter attacking 17 and Peter J showed real grit to get 13, and more importantly, stay with Michael which allowed us to reach 137. We felt that this was 40 runs short, and we knew we would have to bowl very well to win the game. We bowled with aggression and intent to take wickets, but we were uncharacteristically sloppy, and dropped multiple catches as well as bowling the most extras I have seen from a 1st XI. Nevertheless, our bowling showed it's strength, Joe G - 4 wickets, Ben F - 3, and we continually took wickets to leave Clayesmore 132/9, requiring only 6 to win. Finn S came on to bowl under a great deal of pressure with only 1 run required to draw and managed to get the final wicket, caught at cover by Peter J. The 1st XI managed to scrape through this match and it's the mark of a good team to play badly and win, but we agreed to learn from our mistakes moving forward.

Player of the match was Michael H.
