Adventurer and Climber, Tim Emmet, Was An Inspiration to the Sixth Form

It was good to welcome Tim Emmet, a local celebrity in the mountaineering world to King’s Bruton. On first sight, we expected this talk to be about adventure, travel and discovering remote regions of the world. It was not at all what we expected because it was a lesson to discover the talent hidden in ourselves.

Tim started on the climbing wall while he was at school in Somerset; he described being pretty average at climbing and he was refreshingly honest about his capabilities because he wanted to emphasise the fact that he was just an average person who just decided to give climbing a go – he was open minded about what he was doing and where it would lead. He wanted us to have the same outlook: to take up an interest but persevere and set ourselves two or three goals each year, because we too could be at the top of our game. He stressed that we should be prepared to fail because he had failed all three of his goals in 2019, one was to climb Everest in the Autumn, which is the most treacherous time of year. He was closer than ever to achieving these goals, but nonetheless, he had still failed. His lifestyle was certainly envious; he lives in Canada, works 50 days a year and he spends time when he is ‘working’ doing what he loves.

Daisy said ‘Tim was the best speaker we’ve had this term’ and Katie thought ‘he was interesting and gave some great examples.’ Kit added that 'Tim was an inspiration to us all'.
