On Monday 25^th November, the L6^th Form were once again privileged to be able to hear from Louise Phipps; an Avon and Somerset Roads Police Officer.

Louise spoke to the pupils about many of the accidents she had investigated locally and also been present as the family liaison officer. She spoke of the dangers of driving too fast, or wearing no seats belts and also explained the law on these matters, as well as driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and while using phones. As ever, Louise’s frank and down to earth delivery style was compelling and easy to listen to, and invited questions from a number of pupils. We are most grateful to Avon and Somerset Police for giving Louise the time each year to come to Kings’ to give this this potentially lifesaving presentation.

With more U6^th Form pupils passing their driving tests, it was time to educate pupils in the dangers of drink driving. We heard of David Walsh’s car accident when he drove the following morning, still drunk after drinking the night before. He spoke of his accident, being cut out of a burning car and having 40% burns. He spoke of the mental and physical damage and the years it has taken to rebuild his life, after 30 operations. It was difficult at times to listen, but it was an important message - to be sensible and not drink and drive.
