Sixth Form Academic Success

The Sixth Form is a formative stage in pupils’ careers, as they begin to make the transition from school pupil to young adult.

It is their chance to seize hold of the direction their lives are heading in and determine their future pathways. At King’s huge importance is placed on informing, engaging and preparing pupils to make these significant decisions and ready them for the next stage in their lives. Over recent years, a strong programme of advice and support has been established, such that pupils are equipped to move on to a diverse range of next steps. Amongst the 2019 leavers, for example, pupils went into prestigious apprenticeships with Deloitte and others, overseas universities such as Chicago, Utrecht and ESADE (Spain), a wide array of British universities and other career routes. At the heart of King’s Sixth Form guidance and support is that no one route is universally better than another, rather that pupils should be informed and counselled in finding the very best ambitious fit for them as individuals.

Whilst the support given to Sixth Form pupils is in good health, we are excited to be strengthening further the work with individuals through the appointment of two new key roles.

Dr Milly Corrigan - Assistant Head of Sixth Form

With elite university places becoming increasingly difficult to reach, and an ambition to further stretch the most academically able pupils, Dr Milly Corrigan will be taking on the role of Assistant Head of Sixth Form. She will have a particular focus on supporting those applying for elite universities and low admission rate courses, including Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Sciences. She will also have a key role in planning the Sixth Form’s diverse enrichment programme and running the L6th Form Careers Convention.

Be Ambitious; this is the message that underpins all that we do in the Sixth Form at King’s and is the message that I too, will be promoting as I take on the new role of Assistant Head of Sixth Form. I will be asking the pupils to be ambitious when applying to some of the elite universities and courses, by supporting those that are aspiring to reach academic excellence. My aim is to help the pupils in making key decisions about their futures, by building confidence in their abilities and ensuring that their applications give themselves the best possible opportunity to reach their ambitious goals. - Dr Milly Corrigan - Assistant Head of Sixth Form

Mrs Marie Goffe - Apprenticeship Advisor

In keeping with the philosophy of finding the best fit for pupils going forward, the appointment of Mrs Marie Goffe as Apprenticeship Advisor will be key in ensuring that pupils are supported in making the most of the many excellent opportunities in this sphere. Bringing significant business experience and knowledge in her continuing role as Head of Economics and Business, Marie will promote higher and degree apprenticeships, whilst working with individuals in their searches and multi-stage applications, and establishing further links with local and national companies who offer such opportunities.

I am really excited about my extended role at King’s Bruton.  It is an area that I have become increasingly interested in as I engage with more and more pupils who, for one reason or another, do not wish to apply to university. Over the past few years, I have seen an increasing number of pupils establish very successful careers off the back of apprenticeships.  Today, there are incredible opportunities out there, across a wide range of industries and for a wide variety of job roles. Apprenticeships are very much an alternative and cost effective pathway to success and I am looking forward to helping some of our pupils realise this. - Mrs Marie Goffe - Apprenticeship Advisor

As Deputy Head, Sixth Form, I am delighted that we are enhancing our provision in these key areas. It is an exciting time for the Sixth Form and King’s; it is a measure of our ambition in the level of support and guidance we provide for pupils that these two appointments are being made, ambition that we also challenge to be the hallmark of the pupils themselves.

William Daws - Deputy Head, Sixth Form

I am delighted that we are building on the incredible success of Will Daws, our Deputy Head, Sixth Form, through the appointments of Milly Corrigan and Marie Goffe to the new internal posts of Assistant Head of Sixth Form and of Apprenticeship Advisor respectively. Milly and Marie bring a wealth of experience to their new roles; Milly will focus on preparing pupils for highly selective universities and courses, the L6th Form Careers Convention and our enrichment programme, while Marie will advise and support those pupils looking at higher and degree apprenticeships. I am so proud of how we prepare pupils for life after King's and Will, Milly and Marie now provide a dynamic and extensive support network for all Sixth Form pupils. - Ian Wilmshurst - Headmaster
