History Life at King's

As part of the Centenary of WWI, 4th Form pupil Amelia has this summer been out to the Western Front to discover the history of her Great Great Grandfather (Reg Warren) who fought and died during The Great War.

Amelia discovered that Reg was born in London in 1892. Reg joined the London Irish Rifles before the war and was made a corporal. Reg joined the war in 1915 and was in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 when they first used the tanks at High Wood. In 1918, on 23rd July, Reg was sadly killed whilst delivering rations to the front line. Amelia was fascinated to recently discover that Reg's wife was pregnant with his child who he sadly never saw because of the war.

Amelia was inspired to carry out all this research and visit Reg's grave after having recently taken part in her local youth theatre company's show to mark the centenary of WWI, alongside having visited the Western Front with King's on the School's annual Battlefields Trip last October.

Amelia's trip out to the Western Front with her father (Andrew Warren, a local WWI historian expert and author) saw her visit the road between Hénencourt Château to Warloy-Baillon where Reg died, High Wood, Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, London Irish Rifles Memorial in Loos, Dud Corner in Loos, Arras, Lochnagar Crater, Albert, the 47th Division Memorial, Thiépval and Reg's grave in the Warloy-Baillon Cemetery.
