A-Level Biologists Investigated Environmental Variables

Biology Science

The U6th Form Biologists continued to develop their practical and investigative skills through the completion of one of their ‘Required Practicals’.

Throughout the 6th Form, pupils must successfully complete 12 practicals in order to gain the ‘Practical Endorsement’ which sits alongside their A-Level qualification. The most recent practical involved pupils investigating the effect of an environmental variable on the distribution of a species. For many pupils this involved looking at how woodlice respond to different light, humidity and temperature levels. Pupils had to demonstrate and meet a number of ‘competencies’ whilst also ensuring that health and safety, ethical and procedural considerations were all accounted for.

This practical provided a great opportunity for the 6th Form to further develop essential practical skills that will both help them achieve their A-Level qualification and also during further education/employment. With many of the current U6th Form looking at Biology related university courses (Medicine, Zoology, BioMed, Bioengineering, Conservation), the skills, techniques and understanding that they develop during the series of ‘Required Practicals’ will certainly help them in the future.
