A Fun & Happy Evening at the Friends of King's Quiz Night

On Friday evening just under a hundred parents and friends attended the annual Friends of King’s Bruton Quiz held in the Memorial Hall.

The eagerly awaited quiz followed the winning format of previous years based around welcome drinks in the John Davie Room, a ploughman’s supper and a pudding competition.

The quiz included a wide range of questions in six separate rounds including - When is National Toffee Day? What is Cybophobia?, whilst the table top anagrams and dingbats stretched the brains and memories of all those there. The Friend’s Committee Chairman, Mike Sykes, assisted with the scoring, whilst the Chaplain, George Beverly, acted as the Question Master. The simple, yet delicious ploughman’s supper featuring super-fresh rolls (baked by Taylors in Godminster), a vast array of cheese (all of which were made within ten miles of Bruton) and pâtés.  All of this was served with great finesse by the BTEC Hospitality pupils under the watchful eye of Rose Vigers-Belgeonne.

The pudding competition has become a key part of the evening and this year we had an array of 28 splendid offerings created by parents and the BTEC Hospitality pupils. Everyone there had the opportunity to vote for their favourite pudding with the winners being:

  • First place - Suzanne Weekes: Blackcurrant Cheesecake
  • Second place - Julie Rabbets: Chocolate Marquise
  • Third place - Rachel Carter: Gin & Tonic Cheesecake

The BTEC pupils also competed and contested equally well, the following sharing the honours:

  • Alfie - Stem Ginger Treacle Tart
  • Dani & Katya - Charlotte Royale

The winning team in terms of the quiz was 'The Seven Deadly Sins’ who pipped several others to the post with an inspired final round.

It does, however, seem iniquitous to talk of winners when, in truth, everyone was a winner having had the opportunity to come together, have fun, eat well and support the School in such a manner. My thanks goes to the BTEC Hospitality pupils, the Friend’s Committee, the Chaplain, Rose Vigers-Belgeonne and, finally, to all those who came out on a wet evening to support the event.
