PSHEE Talk by Iain Mahony on addiction ‘ A slow Crash’...

Iain Mahony, a recovered drug addict, explained to the 3rd, 4th and 6th Form pupils, in two outstanding talks, how he became a drug addict. Privately-educated in Rutland, he explained how he started drinking at school then tried cannabis, and when he moved to London he became a drug addict. He also explained how individual events and influences from his family were extra pressures on his mental health. Overall, his talks to both year groups were impressive, poignant and inspiring, yet also very thought-provoking to listen to and digest. He pitched them perfectly and the pupils were moved, captivated and challenged all at once. The feedback from pupils and staff has been so positive and I am so grateful for Iain for travelling all the way from Newmarket to speak to our pupils and helping enhance our PSHEE curriculum on Mental Health and Substances.

Emily Simper - Deputy Head Pastoral & Head of PSHEE

Ian spoke with deep honesty and great power on his story of addiction. He broke down the stereotypes of drug addicts being either homeless vagabonds, or hyper-rich celebrities. Instead, Iain spoke of how a vast number of drug users are privately-educated, degree holding, professionally employed, middle-class men and women. Thus, his story felt tangibly relevant. I was especially struck by his clarity that every “social” drug user always thinks they are the exception and will therefore be able to contain their drug use to just social occasions - that they will never become an addict - until they suddenly find the drug has inevitably led to them becoming a slave to getting their next fix.

'The audience did not stir for over an hour and the rapturous applause at the end said it all' Ms Bell-West, 6th Form Tutor

Iain’s talk about his journey overcoming addiction was extremely powerful, inspiring and moving. The honesty and emotion moved everybody leaving an incredible impact which inspired a shared belief in the power of recovery. I will always remember his last words - “I’m here to ask you to not waste your time… because I wasted mine”. - Clemmie - L6th Form Pupil

'The talk was powerful and deep. For the whole duration we were quiet, going on the same journey as him, because this talk was different, this talk was genuine. He told us his life story as well as the regret he feels for not asking for help earlier. Iain had the honesty to tell us his mistakes and the choices he made, some on the brink of being fatal. The realness and truthfulness of this talk, was what made it a privilege to listen to. Thank you Iain'. - Ben - L6th Form Pupil
