Academic Success Sixth Form

The A Level and BTEC examination results at King’s Bruton have again been impressive, particularly as this is the first year of mainly linear A Level assessment.

The School is experiencing national trends of universities requiring high grades but often accepting pupils on lower grades, an increase in universities offering unconditional offers, the importance of the Extended Project Qualification, and the ongoing success of offering A Levels and BTECs in the 6th Form. Most pupils at King’s have again secured places at their first or second choice university, and 9 pupils have accepted unconditional offers. The percentage of A* grades awarded at A level was the highest since 2012 although the overall A*-A grades awarded was 27%. 77% of all grades awarded were A*-C with continued success at BTEC.

Kitty Mant was successful in gaining a place to read History at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University, whilst Sam Walker has been accepted to read Veterinary Science at Bristol University. The following pupils also achieved excellent results; Myles Jenkins (A*A*A*), Holly White (A*A*AA), Barney Latham (A*A*A), Chloe Dawe (A*A*A), Sophia Duval (A*A*B), Ella Corlett (AAAB - A*EPQ) whilst Cully McDermid (Hazlegrove) gained the highest possible grade, Double Distinction* in her BTEC Hospitality along with a Double Distinction in BTEC Sport.

Headmaster, Ian Wilmshurst, commented: “I am delighted with the success of our Upper 6th Form leavers this year, particularly given that this is the first year of linear A Levels. Kitty Mant deserves great credit for securing her place at Cambridge as does Sam Walker for her place to read Veterinary Science at Bristol. There is plenty of success to celebrated across the board from Myles gaining straight A*s, to strong grades from those pupils who have found academic work more of a challenge over the years. It is a testament to the professionalism of our excellent staff, our high-quality guidance and support in the 6th Form, and the strong working relationships between 6th Form pupils and our teaching staff that the majority of our Upper 6th Form leavers go onto the university of their choice.”
