L6th Politics pupils enjoyed an engaging talk from Lord Brady

We had a superb time on Saturday evening, hearing Lord Brady (formerly Sir Graham Brady MP, and Chairman of the 1922 Committee) speak on his parliamentary career and insights on the current Conservative Party.

It was fascinating to hear Lord Brady share various anecdotes about the leadership elections he oversaw for Theresa May, Liz Truss, & Rishi Sunak. Alongside this, it was interesting to learn the various “hidden” roles he has had as an MP and now a Peer in the House of Lords – many of which are documented in his recently launched book, ‘Kingmaker’. The pupils were gripped by all he said; Oscar asked a brilliant question on the asymmetry of English devolution, Dan asked a great question about electoral performance, and Charlie asked a thoroughly analytical question on the need for reforms to “outdated” conventions inside Parliament. Driving back to school from the event was one of those lovely moments as a teacher: all I could hear was the pupils gripped by the subject I teach – they wouldn’t stop debating everything they had heard from Lord Brady!
