Eleven pupils from across the 6th Form and 5th Form enjoy a fantastic career-experience visit to RNAS Yeovilton this week, affording them an opportunity to look behind the scenes of the aeronautical engineering setup, whilst also learning about the helicopter pilot training pathways.

On arrival, the group were introduced to the engineering programme, including the apprenticeship pathways on offer to 6th Form leavers. They were then shown around the engineering facility at Yeovilton, where the helicopters are maintained and prepared. It was a fascinating insight into what it was actually like to be trained and employed working on these state-of-the-art helicopters, with a chance also to see the training being done on both Lynx and Wildcat systems.

Following this, the pupils visited the flight training centre, where the simulators are based and learnt about the rigorous selection and training programmes that Royal Navy pilots undergo. Finally, the group enjoyed looking over the aircraft, exploring the cockpit and other parts of the aircraft.

This was a fantastic opportunity, appropriately in the midst of National Careers Week, to explore what a career in aeronautical engineering or as a Royal Navy pilot could be like in practice.  A huge thanks to the team at RNAS Yeovilton, particularly Cdr Kiernan for enabling the visit.
