More than simply a qualification, the Award encourages pupils to step outside their comfort zones, challenge themselves and discover what they are capable of achieving. Through participation, pupils develop resilience, independence, self-confidence, leadership and teamwork skills, alongside the ability to plan, problem-solve and persevere when faced with challenges. These experiences help nurture well-rounded young people who are prepared to embrace opportunities and tackle future challenges with confidence.
At King’s, many pupils find that they are already well placed to succeed in the Award through their involvement in sport, music, drama, volunteering and the wider co-curricular life of the school. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award brings these experiences together, encouraging pupils to pursue their interests with commitment and purpose whilst making a positive contribution to their communities.

Through a combination of challenge, adventure and teamwork, pupils gain confidence, develop new interests and enjoy experiences that become some of the most memorable parts of their time at school.
Silver and Gold Awards
Pupils work towards their Award by completing four key sections: Physical, Skills, Volunteering and Expedition. This enables them to develop existing talents, explore new interests and give back to others. Whether learning a musical instrument, mentoring younger pupils, improving sporting performance or supporting a local charity, every participant follows a pathway that is tailored to their individual interests and ambitions.
King’s currently offers Fifth Form pupils the opportunity to begin their Silver Award, while Sixth Form pupils may undertake either the Silver or Gold Award. The programme provides an excellent framework for personal growth and is recognised as a significant achievement by universities and employers alike.
Expeditions
The expedition section is often regarded as one of the most memorable aspects of the Award. Participants learn essential navigation, campcraft, teamwork and leadership skills before undertaking a series of increasingly challenging expeditions throughout the academic year.
King’s is fortunate to have a dedicated team of highly experienced staff and access to excellent equipment, including tents, stoves, bicycles and pannier bags, enabling us to deliver both walking and cycling expeditions. Recent destinations have included Dorset, Exmoor, Dartmoor, the Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia and the North Yorkshire Moors, providing pupils with the opportunity to explore some of the UK's most spectacular landscapes.
Beyond the practical skills gained, these expeditions foster determination, adaptability and self-reliance. Working together to navigate unfamiliar terrain, overcome challenges and achieve shared goals creates a tremendous sense of accomplishment and often becomes one of the highlights of a pupil's time at King’s.
