Academic Events Sixth Form

On Wednesday a group of academic scholars were both informed and delighted by two contrasting presentations given by two members of the Upper 6th , Will H and Archie A, at the first meeting of the Headmaster's Essay Society.

Will presented on a complex and highly technical topic (matter-antimatter asymmetries and baryogenesis) which he explained extremely clearly to a non-specialist audience. The ensuing discussion and questions asked by members of the group highlighted their high level of engagement with Will's topic, even from those not studying science subjects. As a delightful example of academic pupils interacting vertically across the different year groups, Max M in the 4th Form particularly impressed us with his considered questions to Will.

Archie's presentation 'How not to invade Germany' brought to life the disastrous Operation Market Garden in 1944 and included footage filmed by Archie in the Netherlands recently for a documentary film which he created about this historical event. Again, Archie's visible enthusiasm for his chosen area of research shone through and inspired the group, who likewise engaged deeply in Archie's specialist topic by asking a variety of thoughtful questions.

Both pupils shone as they shared their academic passions, with their presentations constituting brilliant examples of the intrinsic value and delight which result from pursuing an area of personal academic interest deeply.

The next Headmaster's Essay Society in November will feature the presentations of two other Upper 6th pupils, Polly and Sam, who will be sharing their love for art and medicine respectively - we are looking forward to the next meeting immensely!
