A group of academic scholars were once again both informed and delighted by two contrasting presentations delivered by Upper 6th Form pupils, Polly and Samuel, at the latest meeting of the Headmaster’s Essay Society.
Polly opened the session with a richly engaging presentation on figurative Renaissance paintings. She skilfully guided the audience through the artistic, cultural and symbolic dimensions of key works from the period, such as 'The Last Judgement' by Michaelangelo, 'The School of Athens' by Raphael and 'Mystic Nativity' by Botticelli, explaining complex aesthetic ideas with clarity and enthusiasm. Her evident passion for Renaissance art shone through, sparking a lively discussion in which pupils from a range of year groups offered thoughtful questions and interpretations.
Samuel followed with a compelling exploration of The Grey Zone, drawing on his reading of Owen’s book to examine the moral complexities surrounding medical consciousness. His nuanced explanation of the book’s findings about patients in seemingly vegetative states, but who had awareness, captivated the audience and prompted a deeply reflective exchange of ideas among the group.
Both speakers demonstrated intellectual maturity and an impressive command of their chosen fields. Their presentations exemplified the joy and value of pursuing personal academic interests in depth, and the Society left feeling inspired by the breadth and quality of scholarship displayed.
We look forward with great anticipation to the next meeting of the Headmaster’s Essay Society!
