U6th Form Chemists Attended a Spectroscopy Workshop

Science Chemistry

On Monday afternoon, the U6th Form Chemists travelled to Sherborne Girls School to participate in a Spectroscopy Workshop run by four PhD students from Bath University.

After an initial introduction to the group leaders, a summary of the different routes they had taken to begin a PhD in Chemistry at Bath University, along with a brief synopsis of their current research projects was given. Having covered mass spectrometry, infrared and NMR spectroscopy last year in their Chemistry lessons, the pupils confidently identified the structure of a number of molecules from their infrared spectra, ran their own mass and NMR spectroscopy experiment and deduced which spectrum belonged to which of the unknown samples provided.

It was an impressive display of spectroscopic analysis and deduction. Many thanks to Sherborne Girls School for hosting and Bath University’s Chemistry Department for running this event.
