A successful Ten Tors training expedition to Dartmoor...

Last weekend, was the first Ten Tors training expedition on Dartmoor, after the two practice expeditions on the Quantocks and Exmoor earlier in the year. We camped at the beautiful Runnage Farm, near Postbridge, under a stunning moonlit sky. That evening, pupils took time to put up their tents, have some nourishment and prepare themselves for the next day of walking. That night, the temperature dropped to below zero on the ground, and staff and pupils felt the impact of the cold throughout the night with broken sleep. By 0630 the tents were down and we were in the minibus on the way to the starting point. Team A, guided by Mr Charlton and Mr Barrow headed off one way, and Team B with Mr Harkness and Mr Miller in the opposite direction. The routes were arduous and a great first test for all the pupils. Their navigation was spot on, as was the team work and camaraderie. Unfortunately, Team B encountered some deep Dartmoor bog which brought a few hysterical moments at the end of the day.

All in all it was a very successful training expedition, and well done to the pupils who took part. It was a tough experience which they should look back on with pride, they conquered the miles of unrelenting Elephant Grass which is not for the faint hearted. A special thank you must go to Jim and Mr Hambleton who were driving the support vehicles throughout the weekend.
