King's Bruton is supporting the charity Ocean Youth Trust...

U6th Form pupil, Harry, works with the charity Ocean Youth Trust, and he is absolutely thrilled that King's Bruton will be raising money for the charity. Harry spoke in Assembly and told the whole school about the Ocean Youth Trust.

  • Headmaster: Ocean Youth Trust is our School Charity for this term. Can you tell us all something about it?
Harry: We are a Charity which takes young people, between 12 to 25 years of age, sailing. These young people are often struggling with Mental Health issues or domestic issues and taking them sailing enables them to help develop confidence, life skills and teamwork.
  • Headmaster: Where are you based?
Harry: Our Headquarters are in Portsmouth but we operate primarily at Brixham and Southampton. We run voyages every week from early April to early November and they are open to individuals and in some cases schools and other youth organisations.
  • Headmaster: What is your role and how did you get involved?
Harry: I got involved with the Charity through my old school where I started sailing as a young crew member. I was then selected by the staff skipper, based on merit and experience, to return to train to become a Bosun when I turned 16. A Bosun is responsible for the maintenance of different systems on board and plays a role in emergency situations. I am now a qualified Bosun and a trainee watch leader, meaning I teach a group of young people and oversee sailing related activities onboard.
  • Headmaster: What will the money raised by the King’s pupils and staff go towards?
Harry: If we raise £400-£500 this would pay for a young person to sail with us for a week. This would give a young person a chance to experience life at sea and help develop their resilience. We are completely funded by donations and our running costs are about half a million pounds a year so whatever we can receive would be much appreciated.

"I am delighted that King’s is supporting such a worthy charity and it was fascinating to listen to Harry explain his role in the charity during Assembly." - Ian Wilmshurst, Headmaster
