A Summer term sports roundup from our Director of Sport, Henry Eriksson...

The Summer term has been full of outstanding sporting moments, with some exceptional performances from our teams and individuals alike, whilst there have also been plenty of opportunities for pupils to participate and represent the School.

This was the first year we have offered girls’ cricket as a full games option, and I was delighted by both the take up, and the progress made by both our junior and senior players. Whilst we have some high performing girls playing in the boys’ teams, it was wonderful to see a girls team winning all of their matches convincingly, defeating Sherborne Girls, Downside, Warminster and Wells Cathedral. Our boys’ cricketers have also enjoyed a successful season with the 1st XI producing some excellent performances to win 11 of their 13 matches, defeating Dauntsey’s, Blundell’s and Sherborne teams along the way. With some talented juniors also progressing well, it is an exciting time for cricket at King’s.

The tennis players have enjoyed a really good term with our 1st Teams’ being involved in some very exciting and close fought contests with some big schools. However, the highlight of the term was the parent and pupil tennis competition which was extremely well attended and played in a fantastic spirit and atmosphere. I also can’t remember a stronger term of athletics at King’s and it has been wonderful to see the return of full meets and competitions. Not only did the talented 3rd and 4th Form English Schools’ Cup teams reach the Regional Finals, but we also had seven athletes competing at the South West Track and Field Championships. Better still, three of our athletes have qualified for the English Schools Championships, and we wish Anya, Rory and Robert the best of luck.

As has been the case throughout this year, we have wanted to provide the pupils with as much meaningful variety as possible in the games programme, and it was also fantastic to run the Inter-House Swimming Gala again, whilst the Golf Development Programme has increased in popularity, and we have had twelve pupils playing regularly during games sessions.

As always, none of the above would be possible without the endless support of the staff, and I am extremely grateful to everyone involved for making not only this term, but this academic year such a successful one for sport.
