Our Heads of School, Amelia and Luke, attended the Heads of School Conference...

On Tuesday 20th September, Luke and I travelled to Wells Cathedral School for the Heads of School Conference. It was a busy day, with over 50 Heads of Schools from across the South West involved. We took part in two practical, skills-based workshops. The first looked at the Belbin Test for Team Roles. This was helpful in deducing how different people within the Prefect body can hold different roles, based on their skills. The second workshop was about public speaking, and the importance of visibility, both formally and informally, as a Head of School.

After lunch, we then worked in groups to come up with realistic solutions to scenarios that could occur over the course of the year. This was a useful exercise as we shared advice from our own contexts, such as the importance of a Junior Council within school to increase the ‘pupil voice’, as well as how to deal with safeguarding issues. The day finished with a closing address and Q&A session. Overall, the conference meant that we could discuss how different Prefect bodies function in different schools, while also generating a greater understanding of what we would like to achieve this year as a Prefect body within King’s Bruton.
