Volleyball

King’s Bruton faced Downside in what was, for both schools, their first ever volleyball match.  Excitement was at a fever pitch for the clash and all of the boys acquitted themselves well. King’s won in straight sets: 25-11, 25-9, 25-14. Special mention has to go to Johnny for blisteringly fast spikes, Leo for accurate serves and Luke for maintaining team cohesion as captain. The boys eagerly await their next scheduled match, which is also against Downside.

Cricket

The week started with a rain affected National Cup fixture for the Boys 1st XI, abandoned without a ball being bowled!

Thursday became a showcase of how much Girls’ cricket has developed here at King’s with the 1st XI in National Cup action against Wellington School and the U15 Girls playing a 100 Ball game against Sherborne Girls.

The 1st XI started well with Georgia and Ella putting on a 40 run partnership for the first wicket with Georgia scoring a well worked 54. Some tight bowling at the back end of the innings by Wellington saw King’s post a competitive 112-2 off their 20 overs. Excellent fielding and strong bowling from King’s restricted Wellington’s batters, but unfortunately, lost out with 4 overs to spare. They now wait to see who they play in the National Plate competition. The Girls U15 100 ball debut ended in a thrilling final-ball defeat. King’s posted 99-5 after 100 balls with Sherborne scoring the winning run of the last ball of the game.

Saturday saw all teams in action in a block fixture against Sherborne School with the Girls U15s traveling to King Edwards School, Bath.

The U15 Girls took early wickets against a strong KES Bath side as KES fell for 139 for 9 off their 20 overs. King’s started well with Player of the Match, Ella, scoring a well worked 46. Unfortunately, King’s ran out of overs in the chase and lost by 11 runs.

The U14Bs dug in to post 137 for 7 off 25 overs against Sherborne with Player of the Match, Ben, scoring a glorious 41 runs of just 28 balls. Sherborne looked to attack early but lost regular wickets. Sherborne got over the line with just 7 overs left.

The U14As started well with the bat, Oliver scoring an excellent 42 runs before King’s lost a couple of wickets eventually posting 134 all out of their 30 overs. King’s looked strong with the ball and the game would go down to the last two overs with Sherborne 8 wickets down. Unfortunately, King’s fell to a two wicket loss.

The U15Bs faced strong opposition in an far more experienced Sherborne side but were able to highlight key areas for improvement going into next weekend.

The U15As fought back really well. Posting a below par 64 all out, King’s bowlers showed real grit and determination with talented leg spinner, Ollie, at the forefront of our attack. Sherborne scrapped over the line for the loss of 7 wickets.

It was the first outing of the season for a new look 3rd XI. Bowling first, they restricted Sherborne to 167 all out of their 25 overs. Oliver looked to take the game on but unfortunately, Kings fell for 120 all out.

The 2nd XI posted 105 off their allocated 30 overs and took early wickets with the ball. Unfortunately, it wasn’t and they reached the total for the fall of 4 wickets.

The 1st XI won the toss and elected to bat. A strong opening partnership between Jay and Ben set up the King’s innings well. Jay scoring a very well worked 77 supported well by Ben (28) and Archie (24). Terry and Oscar looked to control the game for King’s when they took 3 very early wickets before Sherborne made King’s pay for a number of dropped chancing and loose bowling. The game would go down to the final ball with 3 required. Ben held his nerve, and the game was tied.

The 1st XI now look forward to National Cup action against Wells Cathedral School at home on Thursday.
