On Monday afternoon, pupils and their Tutors attended a specific year group talk focused on the themes of gambling and gaming. The aim of these sessions was to raise awareness of the risks associated with both activities, highlight the similarities between gambling and certain gaming features, and promote healthy, responsible behaviour when engaging in online entertainment. Adele Bourne, the South West Lead for the Prevention and Education of Gambling and Gaming from the company Ara recovery4all led these sessions and covered the following key points:
Pupils learned that gambling can appear harmless at first but can quickly become a serious issue when control is lost. The pupils were definitely surprised by how many gaming elements mimic gambling mechanics and by hearing personal stories this made the dangers of gambling and gaming addiction more relatable and real. The sessions all encouraged self-awareness and critical thinking when playing games and emphasised the need to set boundaries and reaching out for support if needed.
Adele also gave a very informative parents seminar in the evening and this covered many of the key points above and the question session at the end when two of our senior pupils joined to give their point of view was invaluable.
Overall, the four talks provided valuable insight into the modern challenges surrounding gambling and gaming. They helped pupils, staff and parents understand the potential risks, the psychological mechanisms that encourage addictive behaviours, and how to make informed, responsible choices. Overall, Adele has certainly raised awareness and promoted emotional resilience in the face of digital temptation.
