The department has two full-time teachers, both of whom are qualified SENCOs, and one part-time teacher who specifically focuses on literacy. The team have much experience of mainstream and specialist education setting’s, being teachers of GCSE and A Level as well as head of department level. They also have contact with many relevant outside professionals. Pupils are taught on an individual basis and lessons are timetabled to cause minimum disturbance to the rest of the curriculum. If you have any questions or queries about the Learning Support Department, please do contact us, we would be delighted to help.

Pupil passports engage pupils in their learning, include  parents, and encourage pupils to think about the strengths and weaknesses of the way in which they learn.

  • Every pupil involved with Learning Support also has a profile of need with teaching strategies included, which is sent to relevant teachers to ensure consistency of teaching and learning approaches. These are reviewed termly. We have the highest aspirations for our pupils.
  • There is much use of ICT to encourage independent learning and access to the curriculum: pupils are encouraged to use computers/laptops/iPads and learn to touch type; flash card apps may well support learning across a range of subjects; pupils are also encouraged to explore voice activated software; text to speech software (currently DocsPlus) is available on all school computers.

Study skills help with the technicalities of literacy, all closely linked to the English department’s curriculum, support with embedding science concepts as well as the language of science amongst other things, are all areas covered in the department. Support for mathematics is arranged in liaison with the mathematics department. All work in the department is closely linked to the challenges of the curriculum and pupils are encouraged to use the skills they have learnt in Learning Support in the mainstream classroom. Teachers are involved in the creation of Learning Support targets as well as making appropriate provision and adjustments to teaching which will lead to improved outcomes.

King’s is a CReSTeD school and has a long history of supporting young people with special educational needs. The department is located at the heart of the School in a wing of the Hobhouse Building.
