We had a fantastic time celebrating the European Day of Languages on Friday 26th September, at King’s.
At morning break, we sold cakes made by the international pupils and the money will go to the charity we are supporting this term, Child Autism. Throughout the day, we had a carousel of activities which included quizzes and games. We also had a few teachers teaching Mandarin and Welsh to the 3rd Formers. We tried to understand that languages were a tool to help you have the best opportunities in the World of Work. We all agreed that it equally allowed you to become more open-minded because you understood different cultures. The Sixth Formers cooked some tapas and pancakes. Then, the caterers prepared a selection of delicious European specialities for lunch.
After school, we finished off the day with a Poetry Reading Evening with our Sixth Form linguists. We are extremely lucky at King’s to be able to embrace different cultures, and we had a wide selection of poems in different languages: French, German, Greek, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Swedish, Ukrainian, Welsh. We even had one in Old English and another one in Latin. Sixth Form linguists were involved and many teachers volunteered to join us, including the Headmaster, who read a beautiful poem in Welsh. It was fun, and we had a very successful day.
