The 5th Form Duke of Edinburgh pupils tore themselves away from post-exam celebrations to undertake their Qualifying Expedition in the incredible countryside of Exmoor.
17 pupils turned up full of enthusiasm and began the weekend with a tough 21 kilometres, which tested their fitness and their stamina. Day 2 involved some testing terrain, although it was a less demanding distance with most of the walk in the shade of woodland, with a pleasant sea breeze. The mood in the camp that night was brilliant and with the absence of phones, and a camaraderie was built over shared challenges, cards and games - it was a joy to see.
Day 3 brought searing temperatures and the decision by the DofE Co-ordinator and Assessor to shorten their walk and introduce a task for the pupils in Minehead. The pupils responded very positively to that and walked well.
The supporting staff (Mr Marriage and Ms Checketts and Mr Hamlin, (the DofE Assessor) were exceptional in their support of the pupils. Their enthusiasm and care was fantastic and they worked hard to ensure that the mood remained high (in the face of difficult conditions at times for the pupils) and that the expedition was both successful and safe for all involved.
Huge praise must go to all the pupils who were wonderful company and who gained life-skills and experiences many would not, and they have shown the best attitude and behaviour that we have come to expect from King's pupils.
