Sixth Form Art pupils visited Hauser & Wirth Somerset to see the Eduardo Chillida Exhibition 

A refreshing walk up to Hauser & Wirth to gain valuable first-hand inspiration, with plenty opportunity to record a series of observational studies to support the pupils current mini projects. 

After last week’s CHATS Art talk series, beginning with ‘Modern British Sculpture’, we had a chance to recall and make connections between British post-war sculptors such as Moore, Hepworth, and Frink in relation to fellow European modern sculptor, Eduardo Chillida. Spanish artist, Eduardo Chillida, is best known for his prominent monumental public sculptures. Many of which are also meeting places and spaces for dialogue. Chillida’s practice spans small-scale sculpture, plaster work, drawing, engraving and collage, all of which interact with nature on some level. 

Throughout, we had the opportunity to discuss and explore ideas behind artworks, including a series of drawing activities. A highlight included working in pairs, blind folding one partner whilst the other guided them safely through the gallery, choosing a sculpture before beginning to describe it. This enjoyable experience challenged our pupils to develop their descriptive language, art vocabulary and experience works from an alternative perspective.
