Mud, mud and more mud for cross-country season this term...

One of my highlights of the Spring term has got to be the weekly runs I have with the Cross Country team. Catering for very fast County runners, those training for the Bath Half Marathon, like Mr Jeffrey, or to those who prefer a steady couch to 5km jog like myself, Mr Mitra’s programme is incredibly inclusive and designed to get us all fit.

Runs such as the Dam Run, Twin Towers, and my own personal favourite of Snake Lake, ending with a run through Bruton’s ford, are all around the 5-8km mark and we enjoy pathways through beautiful fields, and this term, a lot of mud. Due to the flooding and constant rain, Bruton has definitely had its fair share of mud, and although it means every week we come back covered in it, even that is part of the Cross Country fun. Personally, I think running is one of the best things you can do to promote good mental health, and when the sunshine comes out, that feeling of running through an open field in the early Spring sunshine is exhilarating.

A huge thanks to the staff: Mr Mitra, Mr Hambleton, Mr Jeffrey, Dr Brown and Mr Lee who have all taken part in the programme this year.

The season was full of laughter and fun. Each run we pushed ourselves harder while still making sure to enjoy it, which led us to multiple team victories! Despite being an individual sport, the team spirit was remarkable and it was a rewarding season.

The cross country team enjoyed a successful season in local matches and individual regional events. Sam qualified for the nationals, while Matilda qualified for the south west competition. Highlights of the season included: the Senior Girls (Matilda, Skyla, Maggie and Flo) winning events at Milton Abbey and Sherborne; Sam winning the Inters events here too. Max captained the cross country team well, leading training sessions and always competing to a high standard.
