Today Lower 6th BTEC Hospitality visited The Newt in Somerset, a luxury boutique hotel and visitor gardens near to Bruton. We were lucky enough to have a talk from their recruitment and HR officer about the history of the estate, growth within the business and an insight into the organisation and structure. Employing nearly 600 staff, The Newt is unique and fascinating. It represents Hospitality at it’s finest and often provides opportunities for our pupils to work part time or embark on one of their many apprenticeships including Chef programme, Hotel operations, Butchery and Bakery.

Despite the persistent rain, on this grey January day,  we ventured on a tour of the organic ‘no dig’ gardens and shop containing many premium ingredients. These were particularly relevant for pupils’ current project on ‘Fine Dining’

We are so lucky to have such opportunities on our doorstep and we are very grateful to The Newt for sparing time to share information with us. Pupils will now complete a case study on the organisation and structure and factors that may affect operations. By hearing information first hand our pupils are exposed to ‘real life’ company culture and the diversity in career opportunities.

We also got to sample some of their incredible croissants and apple juice which are made on site. Apple orchards surround the estate and all aspects of the fruit is used including the waste from cyder making into sourdough crusts.

Always inspiring, with three Michelin keys for excellence and “unparalleled service, design, and location. “ The Newt is ever evolving and each year we discover new investment and new projects. Staff are welcoming and always go the extra mile to help support local schools including King’s Bruton.
