On a blustery day, 3rd and 4th Form Latin pupils travelled up to the road to The Newt in Somerset where we walked up to the phenomenal museum and replica Roman villa 'Villa Ventorum', enjoying the sight of a herd of deer on the way.
Pupils explored the interactive museum which detailed many aspects of both Roman life in Britain and the creation of the Roman villa at The Newt, trying out the game of knucklebones, painting a Roman fresco, writing a curse tablet (!) and excavating remains.
Following this, we stepped back in time as we entered the villa itself, exploring the different rooms of the house (the bath house was particularly exciting!), culminating in a VR experience, which pupils had been keen to try out. I was the only one tempted by the Roman food (pork and apple stew, although I didn't add any garum), however, pupils did have the chance to refuel at the more modern Gregg's on the journey home.
It was a lovely afternoon with some delightful pupils, who really made the most of a superb experience on our doorstep.
