Design and Technology Educational Trips

5th Form Design and Technology pupils visited Longpré Bespoke Furniture Makers in Bruton, a renowned manufacturer of bespoke fine furniture, celebrated for its craftsmanship and attention to detail. The visit offered pupils a rare opportunity to see how high-end furniture is created from conception to completion, and to understand how traditional cabinet-making sits alongside modern design principles.

During the tour, pupils observed skilled makers at work and gained insight into specialist techniques such as veneering, hand-finishing, and classic cabinet-making joinery. Seeing these processes first hand enabled pupils to appreciate the level of precision, patience, and creativity required to produce Longpré’s beautifully crafted pieces. The visit provided a tangible link between what pupils learn in the classroom and how these skills are applied in professional practice.

A particular highlight of the visit was the chance to meet and speak with Isabella and Paul, who generously shared their expertise. They explained the journey of a piece of furniture from raw material to finished product and discussed the challenges and rewards of working in a craft-driven environment. Their enthusiasm and depth of knowledge gave pupils a valuable insight into the world of furniture design and the pathways available within the industry.

We extend our sincere thanks to the team at Longpré for welcoming our pupils into their workshops and for offering such an inspiring and informative experience. The visit has undoubtedly enriched the pupils’ understanding of design, materials, and craftsmanship, and has sparked great excitement for future creative projects.
