Choir Music

The Chapel Choir travelled to the magnificent Tewkesbury Abbey to sing a service of Choral Evensong - an exciting opportunity for the pupils to perform in one of the country’s most historic and atmospheric sacred spaces. The music for the service included a setting of the canticles by Joanna Forbes L’Estrange, The King’s College Service; Psalms 100 and 101, set to chants by Walford-Davies and Nicholson respectively; and the anthem Give Us the Wings of Faith by Edgar Bainton, a poignant and much-loved setting of Isaac Watts’ text.

This Evensong was also a particularly special occasion for the Chapel Choir, as they premiered a newly composed set of responses written especially for them by Stephen Bell, who serves as organist for the vast majority of their services away from school. This performance marked the first public outing of his setting of the Preces, Responses, and Lord’s Prayer, which were warmly received by all present and added a unique and personal dimension to the evening’s liturgy.

Tewkesbury Abbey, renowned for its soaring vaults and glorious acoustic, provided the perfect environment for the choir to showcase their musicianship. The pupils relished the opportunity to hear their sound bloom and resonate throughout the vast medieval space. Special mention must go to Xander G for his role as cantor for the service. Taking on this important musical leadership role for the first time, he approached it with confidence and delivered it with real aplomb. We were also delighted that Reverend George Beverley, our Foundation Chaplain, was invited by the Abbey clergy to officiate the service. Parents of the choir were among the congregation, and many commented afterwards on how beautifully and sensitively the Chapel Choir led the service. Their commitment, focus, and polished musicality were evident throughout, and the pupils represented the School with pride.

The Chapel Choir will next be singing Choral Evensong at Winchester Cathedral on Wednesday 28th January - please do add the date to your diary. We look forward to another inspiring occasion in yet another of England’s great cathedrals.
