The Chapel Choir sang Choral Evensong at Winchester Cathedral on Wednesday evening, marking a memorable visit to one of England’s great sacred spaces. The choir rose splendidly to the occasion, delivering a confident and expressive service that was warmly received by a large and supportive congregation.

The Preces and Responses were specially written for the choir by Stephen Bell, who usually plays the organ for the Chapel Choir on its cathedral visits.

Xander acted as cantor and did so brilliantly, leading with assurance and clarity throughout the service. The canticles were Herbert Sumsion’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A, sung with warmth and secure ensemble, while Psalm 138 was delivered with rhythmic vitality and clear diction.

The anthem was Harold Darke’s much-loved setting of Christina Rossetti’s In the Bleak Midwinter, performed with tenderness and finely shaped phrasing, bringing the service to a reflective and moving close. It was good to be reminded that the Christmas season continues in the church calendar up until Candlemas.

The Chapel Choir is to be congratulated on representing King's with such distinction in this outstanding setting.

The Chapel Choir will next sing Choral Evensong on Monday 4 May (Bank Holiday) at Wells Cathedral.
