The Summer Concert proved a resounding success, showcasing the impressive breadth and depth of musical talent across a wide range of ensembles and styles.
The concert opened with the Orchestra’s performance of Appalachian Morning by Sheldon. The ensemble conveyed a warm tone, immediately drawing in the audience. This was followed by the Military Band’s vibrant renditions of Family Guy (Murtha) and Beguine Festival, both delivered with energy and precision. The School Choir added a touch of golden-age elegance with a sensitive interpretation of They Say It’s Wonderful and then shifted seamlessly into the soulful harmonies of September.
A highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the String Ensemble’s interpretation of Vivaldi’s Concerto in G major RV310, featuring Sebastian as soloist. Sebastian played with style, poise, and excellent technical control - his tone clear and expressive throughout. This was followed by a joyful and playful take of Under the Sea, arranged by Winkworth, which brought smiles across the audience. The Trombone Ensemble offered contrast with the jazzy swagger of Blue Bandy and Mad World, arranged by Derrick. The Chamber Choir impressed with Arnesan’s Flight Song. The ensemble’s blend and tuning were particularly impressive. The Saxophone Ensemble performed Saucy Saunter by Walton, played with a delightful sense of character. The Clarinet Ensemble followed with a charming rendition of The Teddy Bears’ Picnic, arranged by Harris. The Chapel Choir delivered a beautiful performance of Laudate Dominum by Mozart, featuring an expressive solo from Florence. This was followed by My Beloved Spake as set to music by Andrew Wright, with Sebastian and Sophia combining sensitively as soloists to great effect. The Piano Trio’s performance of Marionette’s March by Gounod brought a touch of chamber elegance to the programme, well-judged and tightly coordinated.
The concert concluded with high-octane performances from the Big Band. Valerie (featuring Sophia as soloist) brought the house down with its infectious groove and Sophia’s assured, soulful vocals - a fitting close to a memorable evening. Well done and congratulations to all involved!
