King’s was alive with music and House spirit as the annual Inter-House Music Festival took place this week, filling the Music School with energy and anticipation. Rounds 1 and 2 were held in the Hauser & Wirth Recital Hall, before the competition reached its conclusion with the House Song final in the Memorial Hall.

This flagship event is a highlight of the school calendar, with pupils committing weeks of rehearsal time in preparation for the Solo, Ensemble, and House Song rounds. The result was an afternoon of music-making that demonstrated both musical ambition and impressive teamwork across all Houses.

We were delighted to welcome Mr Joe Arkwright, Director of Music at Sherborne Preparatory School, as adjudicator for the 2026 Festival. From the opening performances, Mr Arkwright commented on the high standard of musicianship, musical commitment, and confident stage presence shown by pupils.

The Festival opened with Round 1, featuring Junior and Senior solo performances from each House. These polished and expressive performances immediately set a high benchmark. Round 2 followed with six ensemble performances, each showcasing strong collaboration, careful rehearsal, and imaginative programming. As with all aspects of the Festival, these performances were entirely pupil-led, making their success all the more impressive.

The Festival culminated in the much-anticipated House Song Round, where entire Houses filled the Memorial Hall with sound, colour, and enthusiasm. This round perfectly captured the spirit of the event, combining musical quality with House pride, unity, and infectious energy. This year there was also the surprise addition of a staff entry – a performance of S Club 7s ‘Reach’ complete with solos from staff.

Congratulations go to all pupils involved for their commitment and outstanding performances throughout the competition. Particular congratulations to Wellesley House, who triumphed in the House Song Round, and to Arion House, who were crowned overall winners after an exceptionally close contest, finishing just ahead of Wellesley House by the narrowest of margins.

Our sincere thanks go to Mr Joe Arkwright for his insightful adjudication and for supporting this important whole-school musical event. The Inter-House Music Festival 2026 was a celebration not only of musical excellence, but of collaboration, leadership, and the vibrant musical culture at King’s.
