The second Hazlegrove and King’s Joint Concert of the year was a tremendous celebration of the talent and musical excellence flourishing across the Foundation. Held in the Hauser & Wirth Recital Hall at King’s, the evening brought together an impressive range of ensembles and performers in a varied and uplifting programme.

The concert opened with the Joint King’s and Hazlegrove Military Band performing Armor of the Mystic, before the King’s Military Band brought colour and energy to highlights from Aladdin. The King’s and Hazlegrove Joint Orchestra followed with a spirited performance of Pirates of the Caribbean, capturing all the excitement and drama of the film score.

Choral music featured prominently throughout the evening. King’s Chamber Choir gave a beautiful performance of Eric Whitacre’s Glow, while Hazlegrove Chapel Choir sang Gilpin’s Sanctus with great poise and musicality. Later in the programme, King’s Chapel Choir performed Sumsion’s magnificent Magnificat in A.

Instrumental ensembles added further variety and colour to the evening. Hazlegrove Senior Strings delighted the audience with selections from Travel Shop – Four Pieces from Around the World, while the King’s Flute Group brought charm and character to Sailor Songs. The King’s Saxophone Group impressed with an expressive rendition of Let My People Go, and Hazlegrove Wind Band gave an energetic performance of Don’t Stop Believing.

Contemporary repertoire also featured strongly, with King’s Rock Band delivering a powerful performance of Cherub Rock by The Smashing Pumpkins. Hazlegrove Senior Flute Group provided a contrasting moment of warmth and lyricism with Over the Rainbow.

The concert concluded on a moving and uplifting note with the Joint King’s and Hazlegrove Voices Choir performing You Will Be Found, bringing together performers from across both schools in a fitting finale.

From start to finish, pupils performed with enthusiasm, skill and confidence, all within the warm and encouraging atmosphere created by a wonderfully supportive audience. It was also a concert tinged with sadness, as Mrs Sclater (Director of Music at Hazlegrove) prepares to move on to pastures new at the end of the year. Mrs Sclater has been a tremendous support over the years, and we shall miss her very much. It was fitting that she conducted the final performance of the evening.

Thank you and congratulations to every musician involved.
