Over the last couple of weeks, the Performing Arts students have had a series of enriching theatre visits designed to deepen pupils’ understanding of live performance, theatrical styles, and professional practice.
Shakespeare’s Globe & National Theatre Visit – 25th March 2026
Pupils enjoyed an excellent educational visit to Shakespeare’s Globe, beginning with a guided tour that explored the history of the theatre, its architecture, and performance conventions. A particular highlight was observing actors rehearsing, which gave pupils valuable insight into the professional rehearsal process and the development of performances.
The day concluded at the National Theatre, where pupils watched an outstanding matinee performance of Summerfolk in the Olivier Theatre. The production featured an impressive set, compelling characterisation and a strong sense of naturalism throughout. Students were highly engaged and gained a clear understanding of large-scale theatrical staging and ensemble performance at a professional level.
Bristol Old Vic – 22nd April 2026
GCSE Drama pupils visited the Bristol Old Vic to see classic, The Woman in Black. We were very lucky to receive an email the day before saying our seats had been upgraded to the stalls, providing an excellent view and placing pupils at the heart of the action! This immersive position enhanced their experience of the production’s effects, atmosphere, and storytelling. There certainly were several jumps at various moments!
The acting was of an exceptionally high standard, particularly John Mackay playing Arthur Kipps, and the performance proved both gripping and inspiring. The visit was particularly valuable so close to GCSE examinations, offering pupils a timely opportunity to experience a live professional production. It also provided strong inspiration for the 4th Form’s devised work, reinforcing the importance of audience engagement, physical storytelling, and minimalistic staging.
These trips offered pupils meaningful exposure to live theatre and professional performance practice. Students responded enthusiastically to being part of authentic theatrical experiences, deepening both their appreciation and understanding of the art form. The department now looks forward to the upcoming Stage Combat Day later this term, which will further extend pupils’ practical learning and creative development.
