‘Mathematics is the brain’s sharpener’ - Angeliza Ampeloquio
People have been studying mathematics for millenia, trying to see where logic will take them and what generalisations or inside knowledge they can take away from their study. It is an incredibly natural activity; mathematics connects us to knowledge systems and to others. Studying Maths helps us find patterns and structures in our lives. Practically, Maths helps us put a price on things create graphics, plan websites, design efficient cars, control rockets, built skyscrapers and generally understand how things work or predict how they might change over time and under different conditions. Maths is one of the best subjects to develop analytical, research and problem-solving skills. Not only will studying Maths help give the knowledge to tackle everyday issues like planning projects, managing budgets and even debating effectively, Maths (to varying levels) is needed for most careers.
In the 3rd Form the pupils embark on the new IGCSE course which covers topics in Number, Algebra, Graphs and Sequences, Shape and Space, and Sets and Data Handling. We encourage pupils to prepare for and enjoy the UK Mathematics Trust individual and team events, offering a maths enrichment and puzzle club and we support our pupils attending various external mathematical activities during the year.
We run mathematics workshops for support and enrichment every evening at 4:30; these are open to all pupils.
Pupils from King’s have continued on to study Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Sciences and Accountancy at many Russell Group universities.
Our current 3rd and 4th Form pupils will prepare for the Edexcel 9-1 IGCSE in Mathematics. The course covers topics in Number, Algebra, Graphs and Sequences, Shape and Space, and Sets and Data Handling. We also offer Additional Mathematics FSMQ lessons to pupils keen to advance more rapidly within the 5th Form.
Extra-curricular Clubs are on offer within the Mathematics department to enhance mathematical enrichment and enjoyment of our pupils and to help prepare for UK Mathematics Trust individual and team events. We support our pupils as they attend a variety of external inspiration lectures and activities during the year.
At King’s, pupils may study for the new Edexcel AS and A2 levels in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics. These include the study of Pure Mathematics (mainly Calculus, Co-ordinate Geometry, Algebra and Trigonometry), Statistics and Mechanics.
Pupils who particularly enjoy Mathematics may opt to study A Level Further Mathematics in addition; it is usually found to be an enjoyable and stimulating challenge. The study of A Level Further Maths can boost the grade for A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics is highly respected by (sometimes required by) mathematically rich degrees such as Mathematics, Physics, Engineering.
6th Form extra-curricular clubs are on offer within the Mathematics department to enhance mathematical enrichment and enjoyment of our pupils and to help prepare for UK Mathematics Trust individual and team events. We support and encourage our pupils as they attend a variety of external inspiration lectures and activities during the year. We also support our A Level pupils prepare for specialist Mathematics examinations required by certain universities, such as STEP and MAT.
