Inter-House Debating - Round 1 - The Motion:

‘This House believes the town of Bruton should accommodate a significant number of asylum seekers’

The annual Inter-House debate season commenced with pupil orators in fine form in the Arion/New House match up. Arion proposed the motion: ‘This House believes the town of Bruton should accommodate a significant number of asylum seekers’ with Third Former, Ophelia C making a thoughtful, reasoned speech, outlining an emotive and well defined rationale. Similarly, Jonty M eloquently made the practicality case for opposition. The following debaters,  Eleanor C and Oscar B bounced back and forth over issues on local and international contexts, financial implications and emotive cases for local history, culture and responsibility. Finally, Gruffydd J and Abi W dealt with issues from the floor debate and each other’s cases, with rigour, mental agility, and sensitivity. In the end, Arion came out on top defeating New House by 23 points to 19. Well done to all on an excellent first debate.

It was fab to restart the Inter-House Debating Competition this week with a great standard set by the teams from Priory House and Blackford. The new focus on “Logos, Pathos, Ethos” has really helped the debaters to consider the logical flow of their arguments, the credibility of the supporting evidence they deploy, the emotional rhetorical skills they use, and the depth they engage with the other sides arguments. It was ace to see 3rd Formers like Jack speaking to 120 people with such confidence and powerful language. The standout debater was Fraser who addressed some complex questions from the floor with great skill and really chose to confront the arguments proposed by Priory House. Overall, Priory just edged the debate by 1 point with the final score being Priory House 21, Blackford House 20. We look forward to the next round!
