On Friday 30 April, our Upper Sixth BTEC Hospitality pupils hosted their Culinary Showcase, celebrating and demonstrating the skills they have developed over the past two years of study. This year’s theme was a contemporary afternoon tea inspired by global food trends, and pupils worked tirelessly to adapt, refine and perfect their recipes.

Guests included teams from The Newt in Somerset, ex pupil and now chef from Osip, alongside parents, staff and Old Brutonians, who were treated to an exceptional afternoon of food and hospitality.

Preparation began in earnest a few weeks before the event. Pupils planned the showcase in full, writing professional briefings and risk assessments. Recipes were tested, adapted and refined through peer and staff feedback, while trends observed during our recent trip to London were thoughtfully incorporated and developed.

Pupils formally applied for specific job roles based on their skills and interests, mirroring a real-life recruitment process. Once teams were formed, they took full responsibility for planning and delivering their respective areas: ‘Kitchen, Operations and Beverages.’ From concept to execution, the entire event was pupil-led.

I have been incredibly impressed by how the Upper Sixth embraced this responsibility. They worked relentlessly—often late into the night—sharing ideas, meeting in teams, problem-solving and striving for excellence throughout.

Guests enjoyed three beautifully executed courses, including open sandwiches, sweet and savoury scones, and an array of cakes. Lower sixth Hospitality pupils supported both in the kitchen and with service. The beverage team served cocktails and mocktails, Crémant, and a wide selection of speciality teas kindly provided by Sip and Smile. Wherever possible, local suppliers such as Godminster and The Newt in Somerset creamery were used.

For me, the greatest joy comes from watching pupils grow in confidence and truly shine in their own individual ways. Every pupil contributed, with many going above and beyond to ensure the success of the showcase. They are a true reflection of the King’s community spirit.

It is the absolute highlight of my year and makes me incredibly proud!
