The U6th Form A Level Geography pupils visited Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station...

On Tuesday morning, the U6th Form A Level Geography pupils visited Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station. After a journey of just over an hour, pupils arrived at the HPC Visitor Centre. They were shown a series of introductory videos about the project and had the opportunity to have a go at a number of interactive activities highlighting how nuclear power works, as well as other aspects of the construction of the power station. Following a presentation from the Education Officer, pupils were taken on a bus tour of the construction site (the power station is not due to be operational until 2027). This gave pupils the opportunity to see the sheer scale of the project, as well as the economic, social and environmental impacts of it. Pupils are studying Energy Production and Its Impacts as part of the ‘Environmental Management’ topic of their A Level course, and HPC is a crucial case study example which they will be able to use to support this. It was great to have the chance to see the progress of this large-scale project, which is the first nuclear power station to be built in the UK since the 1990s.
