Hockey: Boys' 2nd XI vs Sherborne School
The Girls' 1st XI Hockey team continued their remarkable season by defeating Latymer Upper School in the semi-final of the Tier 2 National Schools' Cup last week. This victory sees the team qualify for the final, where they will line up against the talented Manchester High School for Girls at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Tuesday 10th March.
The match itself was a tense and nervy affair, particularly after King's had scored two goals in the opening ten minutes of the match, courtesy of Elena and Lucy B. Latymer responded positively to put King's under pressure for the remainder of the half, and this pressure told as they reduced the deficit just before half time, despite the efforts of the outstanding Tilly E in the King's goal. Going into half time 2-1 up, King's could regroup, and they came out positively in the second half, looking to restore their two-goal lead. However, Latymer did all that they could to level the scores and some excellent penalty corner defence kept the hosts at bay. As the second half wore on, it became an exciting and nerve-wracking affair with chances at both ends. However, with five minutes to go, Latymer took the decision to remove their goalkeeper in favour an additional outfield player, however it was King's that the sealed the victory, as Lucy W swept into an empty goal with only seconds remaining. The players celebrated with the large travelling contingent of supporters on what was a special day for King's hockey and sport in general. The team has now seen off several high-quality teams throughout the course of the competition, and this latest performance truly demonstrated the grit, determination and resilience that this team has in abundance.
A huge thank you must go to the whole squad, and the incredible travelling support who made it a day to remember. We will need more of the same as we contest the final after half term.
