This week the Royal Navy Cadets tried their hand at raft building at Mill on the Brue. They enjoyed a sunny afternoon planning and designing their rafts on the river bank with two teams pitted against each other. While they thought the task was to build a raft, what we were actually assessing was their ability to work as part of a group. There are natural leaders and those who shy away from the position. Naturally, those who shied away the most made themselves susceptible to being Team Captain! It was really interesting watching the others respond by either trying to assume command, or by following orders. They have much to learn and opportunities like this are the perfect setting for self-reflection and personal growth to occur. When it came time to launch their vessels disaster struck as both rafts suffered massive structural failures..... but the teams had meshed and much fun was enjoyed as we all piled into the river. The trails of wet footsteps followed us all the way back to school. It turns out our boots are quite waterproof.... especially when it comes to keeping water in!
