Royal Navy section enjoy an unusually exhilarating afternoon trying land sailing

The Royal Navy section enjoyed an unusually exhilarating afternoon as CPO Warren Lowther introduced cadets to land sailing using RN‑provided Blokart yachts. With near‑perfect wind sweeping across the concrete courts, cadets quickly discovered that these deceptively simple craft can generate impressive speed. Several managed controlled two‑wheel riding, while a handful took the experience a step further by capsizing with enough enthusiasm to tear a sail—an unscheduled moment of drama taken in good humour by all involved. Initial nerves soon gave way to broad smiles, and even the more anxious cadets showed commendable resilience in getting stuck in.

Running alongside the sailing was a chartwork and seamanship exercise focused on buoyage and safe passage. Working in small teams, cadet leaders guided their groups in marking out port and starboard lateral marks, safe‑water buoys and cardinal markers, transforming the car park into an improvised stretch of navigable “water.” It proved an effective reminder that clear instruction and sound teamwork matter as much on land as at sea.

The weather played its part beautifully, with the rain holding off just long enough for the wind to build and the yachts to fly. It was an afternoon that blended adrenaline, learning and leadership in equal measure. The cadets represented the section with enthusiasm and composure, and we remain grateful to Royal Navy Headquarters for providing the Blokarts and making such a memorable session possible.
