Our Royal Navy CCF cadets enjoyed a rare and highly memorable visit to HMS Heron, where they were given unrestricted access to areas normally closed to the public. The day began with a personal tour of the Royal Navy Air Wing’s historic and display aircraft, during which cadets were able to climb into cockpits, inspect engines up close and learn how naval aircraft are specially adapted for the demands of operating at sea. Seeing these aircraft at such close quarters brought naval aviation to life and gave cadets a real sense of the engineering, skill and innovation behind it, not to mention the courage of the pilots who flew them in combat.
The visit continued with a tour of the Wildcat Helicopter Training Facility, where cadets learned about the remarkable capabilities of modern naval aviation, including the precision targeting systems used with naval ordnance and air-to-sea torpedoes. The day concluded with a look at the Leonardo Wildcat simulators, used to train aircrew in realistic operational scenarios. Throughout the visit, the cadets were engaged, curious and a credit to the school, making the most of a unique opportunity and leaving HMS Heron with a greater appreciation of the Royal Navy’s aviation capability.
